BEFORE YOU HIKE Yellow Branch Falls
As with all hikes, leisurely or advanced, make sure you check trail conditions prior to going. Climbing in inclement weather can be treacherous, and we don’t recommend straying from the maintained trail, especially if there’s rain. We also recommended using the All Trails app to help you search for the best places to take a hike (anywhere!), keep track of your favorite trails, download maps, and more!
WHERE IS Yellow Branch Falls?
This park is maintained by the National Forest Service in the Sumter National Forest. The nearest town is Wallhalla in Oconee County, South Carolina. If you continued up the road to Issaquenna Falls you’ll learn that this area was originally Cherokee land. It was later settled by Irish and German immigrants before the Civil War.
Yellow Branch Falls Parking and entrance Fees
This particular parking lot is fairly small, so it isn’t unusual to see cars off to the side of the road as you get nearer to the trail entrance. As the lot can fill up quickly during peak season, we do recommend getting there early. There was no entrance fee for this location. Additionally, there are two pavilions and a latreen available near the parking lot.
What To Expect While Hiking YellOw Branch Falls
You’ll be walking through water, across multiple streams, and over downed logs crossing creeks in order to reach the falls. While it isn’t difficult, you’ll want to make sure to wear appropriate footwear.
Being a popular hiking spot, Yellow Branch Falls can get congested during the warmer months.
What to Wear and bring
Knowing we were going to be hiking for a several hours we made sure to wear quality clothing, that’s up for the task. We both chose our Danner boots to ensure comfort and stability. Additionally, since we’d be out in a wild area we wanted to protect our legs from the various flora and fauna, so we chose our Vuori hiking pants. Yes, these pants, made of synthetic materials, are a departure from our usual preference of natural fiber, but they are very effective at being quick to dry, durable to prevent snagging and tearing, and lightweight to not wear us down. We were sure to not forget our wide brim hats. It’s important to keep the sun off your heads and bugs (ticks especially) out of your hair.
In our day pack we brought two Yeti’s of water and snacks to keep us fueled. Honestly, with it being over 90 degrees and 3 miles of up and down hiking we could have used a little more water and a few more snacks. We also always a bring a mini first aid kit, bug spray, basic pen knife, parachute cord, matches and a flashlight. It may sound overkill, but being that this was a remote area you should always be prepared.
How long does it take to hike Yellow Branch Falls?
It takes about 45 minutes to an hour each way, if you’re hiking at a leisurely pace. Adding in time to stop for photos you’re probably looking at 2.5 hours total, unless you choose to stay at the falls for awhile. It’s certainly a majestic backdrop to enjoy a well-deserved lunch, but remember to leave no trace!
Ascent/Descent
This trail transitions frequently from hugging the edge of steep hills to being down in the ravines with the bubbling creeks. With so much ascending and descending, take your time to be safe and not get warn out. Elevation gain for this trail is 475 feet.
Best Time To Visit Yellow Branch Falls
If it hasn’t rained in some time, the falls may just be a trickle, but come after a rainstorm and the abundant cascades will look more like a fountain! The Carolinas can be a hot area in the summer, you’re in the subtropics so closer to the equator and that humidity is no joke. That being said, we would definitely return to the falls in the spring when everything is blooming or in the fall when it has cooled off.
Where To Stay Near Yellow Branch Falls
We recommend staying off-grid during your camping trip, but without sacrificing the amenities. Glamping it is! If you’re like us and don’t want to put your back through a night of sleeping in a tent on the ground, we highly recommend Getaway! These outposts are situated two hours of major cities, and in this case, the Lake Hartwell getaway cabin is about 50 minutes of Greenville, SC and only 25 minutes from Yellow Branch Falls!

Issaquenna Falls are about a five minute drive from Yellow Branch Falls. This a .4 mile-round trip hike with views of a 200’ tall cascade. Also in the same park is Stumphouse Tunnel, an abandoned train tunnel from before the Civil Way. Make sure to bring a flashlight, as it is very dark.
