Product photography: Mandrn fanny packs, the hands-free travel essential

Belt bags. Fanny packs. Bumbags. Slings. Whatever you want to call them, there’s no doubt that — fan of the style or not — they’re a functional and convenient accessory for easy, hands-free travel.

When these started making a comeback a few years ago, I resisted the idea, associating them mainly with frumpy tourists. Consider this post an apology for my judgement. Clearly, I was wrong, because unlike fanny packs of the late 80’s and early 90’s, modern styles are much more sophisticated and timeless.

While shooting product and lifestyle photography for a travel bag brand, I became even more intrigued by the idea of a fanny pack, but waited a bit longer to see if it would be a passing trend. Spoiler alert: this style is here to stay, and I think I know why…

Why every traveler should have a belt bag

Streamlined

When you’re on-the-go, the goal isn’t to lug around all the things in a heavy tote, rather, to bring only what you need on any given day. The epitome of minimalist packing, fanny packs are a practical choice, helping you to pare down to the basics.

Comfortable

Completely changing the way I travel — whether in my own city, or in another country — fanny packs help prevent the neck, back or shoulder strain often felt at the end of a long day exploring. They give you the freedom and mobility to do other things, like eat a snack, take photos, or walk hand-in-hand. And they’re so comfortable that even dining, I don’t have to sit my purse on the floor or dangle it off a chair.

Secure

My favorite way to wear this style is slung across the chest in a cross-body fashion, keeping the contents close and secure. Whether on crowded buses or in city squares, you can worry less about phones slipping out of pockets, wallets being swiped, or the chance of pickpocketing.

Ethically and sustainably made

So it was decided. Trendy or timeless, I knew that I’d get frequent use out of this travel essential. Type A, I do a *ton* of research before buying products, and my search led me to Mandrn, handmade leather belt bags that support Balinese and Mexican artisans. The design would need to be timeless and true to my preferred style, meaning it’s something I can wear regardless of what trends come and go.

Natural materials

I knew I wouldn’t want sporty nylon, polyester, or synthetic styles that seem ever-present. Prioritizing natural, long-lasting materials, leather gives this bag a high-end aesthetic, making it just as ideal for touring the city, as it is to style with resort wear for an upscale dinner, or for a day at Disney.

Versatility

This bag can be worn three ways: in the traditional style around the waist, slung across the chest, or over the shoulder. I opt for use as a cross-body, feeling it’s not only the most comfortable, but also the most stylish.

Small and lightweight

Most days, I don’t want to care around a large and cumbersome tote. This fanny pack fits all the basics — phone, keys, wallet and passport, sunglasses, and chapstick. I’m a minimalist, and have loved traveling hands-free with the Remy belt bag.
