Why Squarespace is our website builder of choice!
Why Squarespace?
Why not Wordpress, or Wix for example?
We get this question a lot! And the answers may surprise you!
Before we get into it, ultimately, you should choose the platform that best fulfills your business needs. If you’re using another website platform you’re happy with, that’s great! But if you’re starting a new website, or feel your current platform isn’t functioning well, here are 5 reasons why Squarespace is not only our favorite platform to design on (and we’ve tried them all!), but also the best website builder for many types of businesses!
Squarespace is highly-customizable
Here’s the thing: those not in the know think all Squarespace sites look alike. And maybe they do… if you go the DIY route and use a generic Squarespace templates, or the designer you hired doesn’t know how to code. Thankfully, we do! In fact, coding is our jam!
If you don’t want your Squarespace site to, well, look like a Squarespace site (which is to say, a little boring), luckily for you, this is a problem that can easily be overcome! We like to consider Squarespace a blank canvas. Use it for the high-quality backend, and work with a good website designer (someone who’s able to code) to push the bounds of what Squarespace is capable of, and implement unique layouts and advanced features that aren’t available to DIY Squarespace users. The result will be standout website that delivers on style and functionality, so there’s no need for you to compromise.
Squarespace is the most User-friendly website builder
We firmly believe that Squarespace has one of the most intuitive, user-friendly interfaces of all website builders. When we design our client sites, we consider the fact that they’ll likely be making minor updates themselves — writing copy, publishing blog posts, updating images, tweaking layouts, etc. One of the biggest reasons we recommend Squarespace is because their backend has been developed in such a way that our clients are confident and in control making changes going forward. You won’t have to touch your custom CSS to make changes, because the drag-and-drop capabilities and site styler are so easy to use! And while we’re at it, let’s talk about responsive design. As of Q1 2024, 59.92% of people browse from a mobile device rather than a desktop, meaning it’s more important than ever that your designer prioritizes both desktop and mobile design. Squarespace uses the same drag-and-drop technology on both, making a cohesive site on all devices hassle-free!
Squarespace has built-in business tools
Squarespace is an all-in-one solution that is streamlined and easy-to-navigate. From your domain or Google Workspace accounts, to native features like announcement bars, pop ups, and forms, everything is under one roof and is managed within the platform! SEO is built in with customizable metadata, image alt text, page descriptions, and XML site mapping to increase visibility, ensure your website is indexed by search engines, and drive organic traffic to your site. And with just a few clicks of a button, you can also connect your Google Analytics and Sesrch Console accounts to access data that propels your business forward.
Other platforms (*cough* Wordpress *cough*) require you to piece together various plugins and widgets for features that should come standard. For example, you’ll need to host with your website builder, connect your domain from another party, buy templates from a different vendor, analytics widgets from yet another, and so on.
Squarespace takes Security seriously
We’ll get straight to the point: Wordpress is behind the times when it comes to security. Wordpress is an open-source platform. Think of it like Wikipedia — anyone can publish content, but that doesn’t mean it’s reliable. The same is true for Wordpress — anyone can make plugins available. Good in theory, but not in practice, this means they’re not regulated or verified to be trustworthy or secure, putting you at an increased chance of being hacked. Becuase these plugins were not specifically built to work toegether, they can also conflict and cause your site to break. In addition, Wordpress must be manually maintained, and if not regularly updated, opens you up to security risk or site errors that can cause your website to crash.
On the other hand Squarespace is regularly maintained. It’s one of their strengths! You don’t need to worry about manually installing security updates, or whether features are safe to use. Squarespace constantly works behind-the-scenes to automatically implement updates and keep your website in working order. Much less stressful, right? And what business owner doesn’t want one less thing to worry about?
Squarespace has above-par customer Support
Squarespace has a stellar customer support team that quickly responds to chat or emails, and help forums are also readily available. They take customer feedback seriously, and are often implementing new tools and features to provide a high-end user experience.
Limitations of Squarespace
Being that we specialize in custom Squarespace design, you might be worried this post is a little biased. While it’s not hard to convince you that Squarespace is one of the best website platforms out there, we’re all about transparency! Every website builder has their own strengths and weaknesses, so let’s talk about some of the area’s Squarespace can improve.
Some advanced features may require Paid upgrades
Squarespace does offer some solutions that require additional subscriptions. We wouldn’t quite classify it as a negative, because more than likely you’re already paying for these subscriptions elsewhere, and to have them managed in one place is a huge benefit. However, it’s worth noting that for features like built-in newsletters (which can be designed to match your site aesthetics!) or scheduling tools you will need to pay extra.
More powerful E-Commerce options are available elsewhere
While Squarespace excels as the website builder for service-based brands, their e-commerce options aren’t anything to laugh at! Businesses have the ability to set up multiple online stores, list up to 10,000 products per shop, manage inventory, track orders, accept secure payments. That said, if you have a large inventory, or your business solely focuses on running an online store, we wholeheartedly recommend Shopify for even more powerful e-commerce tools.
