About Aurora Shoe Co

In a world where quality, sustainability, and style often feel like they’re at odds, Aurora Shoe Co has found the perfect balance. Founded on a passion for quality, craftsmanship, and eco-conscious design, Aurora Shoe Co has become a staple in the world of footwear that not only look great but also stand the test of time.

Whether you're looking for a shoe that reflects your eco-conscious values, or simply a reliable, comfortable, and stylish option, Aurora delivers on every front. With their commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and customer satisfaction, it’s no wonder they’ve become a brand that both men and women trust.

Barefoot Inspired

You’ve probably heard mention of barefoot-footwear, or maybe you’re a fan of it yourself. My first foray into barefoot-inspired design, Aurora Shoe Co. allow for natural foot movement and space, emulating a similar feeling to that of walking barefoot.

Why does this matter?

Short answer: for foot health.

Long answer: Barefoot shoes are said to be one of the healthiest choices for your feet. Aurora Shoe Co. Mary Jane’s mimic the natural movement barefoot walking by allowing your feet to flex at your arches, and grip at your toes. This approach in construction leads to healthier feet, better body alignment, and can even reduce back problems.

Their shoes are built with a flexible sole, little to no lift in the heel, and — hugely important for myself or others that suffer from bunions — a wider toe box! Another difference is the relatively flat insole. While some might be resistant to this at first, it’s likely because after years of wearing conventional footwear, your feet can weaken. You might notice this when, for example, you’re walking barefoot on the beach. But don’t worry — if this is the case, you can ease your way into barefoot-style shoes. Your feet will thank you!

Materials and craftsmanship

Handmade in Aurora, NY, Aurora Shoe Co. was founded on the principles of handmade craftsmanship. Each pair of shoes is made by-hand, in-house, one step at a time, using locally-sourced natural materials that ensure durability, so you can wear them day-in and day-out without worrying about them wearing out. This not only helps reduce their carbon footprint, but also supports the local community and ensures consistency in quality control.

The secret to Aurora Shoe Co.’s comfort lies with the leather, which is sourced locally from Horween Leather Company. Making a name for themselves for over 100 years or 5 generations, Horween is now synonymous with quality.  Sourced only from mature steers that are farm animals and not raised for the express purpose of using their leather for goods, Aurora Shoe Co.’s thick and supple leather uppers should last for a lifetime with minimal care!

Soles are often the first things to wear out, but Aurora Shoe Co. footwear can easily be resoled at your local cobbler. Don’t have one? Embodying the philosophy of made-to-last, they offer repair services for all of their shoes. Whether your well-loved pair needs new soles or repair stitching, simply send them back to their factory and help keep textile waste out of landfills.

Want to see more? You can! Aurora Shoe Co. offers tours of their NY workshop, where conscious consumers can get a look at behind-the-scenes of the production process.

Aurora Shoe Co Women’s Mary Jane Shoe

Aurora Shoe Co.’s Mary Jane’s are such a classic, iconic style that balance practicality. Based on the silhouette of a Chinese dance slipper, this style features a rounded toe, brass buckle, and minimal stitching. The adjustable strap ensures a snug fit, allowing you to personalize the comfort level to your preference. No matter your foot shape, you’ll find that the Mary Jane adapts to provide just the right amount of support, while the flexible sole lets you move with ease. The leather molds to the shape over time, and can be worn with socks or tights in winter, and bare feet in summer.

The biggest difference for me has been the wide toe box — for the first time in my life, my freedom of movement is no longer restricted and my toes aren’t scrunched on top of each other and it feels amazing. Truthfully, I’m a convert, and can see myself adding other styles of Aurora Shoe Co. products to my line-up in the near future (like the New Mexican open-toe sandal, or the Middle English clog).

If you’re someone who spends long hours on your feet or simply wants a shoe that feels as good as it looks, the Aurora Mary Jane’s are a game-changer.

sizing

I typically wear a size 9 in shoes, occasionally — for boots or shoes where I wear thicker socks — a 9.5. I took a 9 in the Mary Janes, and they fit like a glove! At first, they’re meant to be slightly snug, but after only a day of wear, the leather warms right up and begins molding to your feet. There was no break-in period.

A large range of sizes, they offer everything from a Women’s 5 to a Mens 12, with half sizes and multiple widths available.

If you’re unsure about sizing, send them a tracing of your foot and they’ll ensure an exact fit!

Why Choose Aurora Shoe Co?

Takeaway: If you’re after sustainable, long-lasting, and comfortable footwear, make the healthy choice with barefoot shoes! Aurora Shoe Co exemplifies the perfect blend of style, construction, and conscious production. So why not step into comfort and make a choice that’s good for the planet and for your body?
