Product photography for Pyne & Smith: ethically-made linen dresses

After discovering the magical properties of the fabric during an unbearably hot California summer, in 2014 Joanna made herself a simple linen dress. Brushing up on her sewing skills, she sewed a small collection for a craft market in LA, which has since turned into a recognizable and sought-after style. Today, Pyne & Smith has become well-known for their ethical and environmentally-healthy linen dresses made for a lifetime of adventure.

Collections launch three times a year: in March, the Spring line, a Summer hot weather line, and an Autumn/Winter line in September. Designed in their California studio, materials are selected to last, with excellent craftsmanship and attention-to-detail. Colors, patterns and custom fabric are exclusive to Pyne & Smith. Sustainably made in small batches so as not to over-produce, only 50-130 unites of each style, which means if a color or design is popular, it can sell it quickly, and colors or patterns are not likely to be repeated or re-released in the future. Manufactured with quality and compassion, a small team of employees and contractors are paid living wages. Garments are made entirely from 100% European flax linen. A natural fiber that improves with time, linen is a breathable, durable, hypo-allergenic, and absorbent fabric that not only keeps you cool and fresh in the Summer, but warm and dry as an insulating layer in the winter. Custom buttons are crafted in Central America from naturally and sustainably harvested tagua palm seeds or chorizo nuts. After dresses are cut and sewn in California, textile waste is sent to a recycling center to be shredded and recycled into car and airplane seat coverings.

A source of inspiration for her timeless aesthetic and simple design, the English countryside is reflected in the distinct silhouettes. Pyne & Smith clothing is meant to be worn — not overly precious, stored away in a closet only to be brought out on special occasions. Holding to the philosophy that when you feel comfortable, you can be your most authentic self, every garment is designed with comfort in mind, without sacrificing style. As functional as it is elegant, these garments are a favorite whether for a walk on the beach, as office attire, or out to dinner.

As of 2022, an exciting new addition to Pyne & Smith was launched in the form of Fair Isle knitwear, with Scottish wool that meets the same ethical standards as her dresses. And with the next launch in Spring, organic cotton pieces and other new additions will be available for the first time.
